The Kills vs. Fleet Foxes

Next week is possibly the busiest week in music in Zurich since the summer festival season – so many good things, so little time! And only one of me.

First decision to make is on Monday 21.11.11, where the choice is between the formidable and fearless rock bombast of The Kills (ah, one of my girl crushes, Alison Mosshart) and the earnest indie-folk melodicism of Fleet Foxes. So what will it be, folks? Tough choice….

Here are a couple of vids to help you choose -

The Kills, ‘Baby Said’:

Fleet Foxes, ‘Grown Ocean’:

Live review: Belle and Sebastian @ X-Tra, ZH, 13.04.11

Fulfilling a long-held wish is so damn satisfying. Back in April, on a warm spring day, I finally got to see a full length Belle and Sebastian gig (as opposed to the short festival set I saw last year at Zurich OpenAir). No matter that Belle and Sebastian have been around for years now, and none of us (band or fans) are young hipsters anymore (or perhaps ever were) – I still adore them.

But first, I had to suffer through support band Schwervon! (their exclamation, not mine). Sorry, but not my cup of tea. Shrill lo-fi anecdotal ramblings, irritating rather than quirky.

But all traces of vexation quickly dissipate when Stuart Murdoch and his band of merry men and women take the stage. Gentle, melodic and at times bouncy indie pop, so saturated with nostalgia for me that I can barely stand it. God, the 90`s!

The set begins with 1996`s ‘The State I Am In’, and then breezes through ‘Dirty Dream Number Two’, ‘Write About Love’, ‘I’m Not Living In The Real World’, ‘Sukie In The Graveyard’, and the beautiful, tender ‘Piazza, New York Catcher’, before ‘Lord Anthony‘, complete with make-up session:

Aww, Stuart and his penchant for make-up. Like last year, he gets a few girls up on stage for a danceathon during ‘The Boy With The Arab Strap‘, and very charmingly can’t seem to bring himself to sing ‘…your ten biggest wanks…’ because of the ladies present. Such lovely manners. At the end they are awarded with gold medals for their enthusiastic participation. Stuart is quite the chatty chap, telling us how he has been riding around Zurich all day on the trams, of which there are so many, and all for free! – well, at least he didn’t pay anything (let’s hope there isn’t a ZVV rep in the audience)…

The evening ends on an encore of ‘The Blues Are Still Blue’ and finally, a memorable ‘Judy And The Dream Of Horses‘, which is so jaunty, carefree and all-out poppy that I float out of X-Tra on wave of happy delirium, the perfect note on which to end the evening.

Love and other drugs – Belle and Sebastian

One of the highlights of 2010 for me was seeing Belle and Sebastian play at Zurich Open Air in August. How many years had I waited for just such an opportunity? More than you can count on both hands, and perhaps a few toes, too. Suffice to say, having another opportunity to see them here in Zurich next week (13.04.11) when they play at X-Tra makes me a very, very happy camper.

Belle and Sebastian emerged from the Glaswegian indie scene in the mid-90s on influential label Jeepster (label mates included Snow Patrol, Looper and The Gentle Waves), and immediately struck a chord with middle-class indie kids everywhere with their gentle, memorable odes to cups of tea, herbaceous borders, British fauna and books. I still adore my early Belle and Sebastian EPs (collected in the 2005 Jeepster release, Push Barman To Open Old Wounds), and have given each and every one of their albums the extended, super high rotation treatment over the years. No-one does unbearably catchy and uplifting indie pop songs quite like Belle and Sebastian.

Their eighth studio album Belle and Sebastian Write About Love was released in October 2010. Here is the clip for the sweetly poppy ‘I Want The World To Stop’, taken from the Write About Love TV show/album promo – ah, Stuart Murdoch, just the sight of you in those geeky glasses is enough to set my fangirly heart racing:

Live review: Hurts @ X-Tra Zurich, 21.02.11

It’s not often that I witness the sort of pure pop spectacle that I saw last night, when Mancunian duo Hurts played their second sold-out show at Zurich’s X-Tra. I’m usually to be found on the more rock/indie part of the spectrum. But what can I say, I’ve got a soft spot for big pop symphonies and grand gestures. Like a big, fluffy, whipped-cream-cherry-topped ice-cream sundae, who doesn’t like to indulge in something sweet, luscious-looking and insubstantial every once in a while?

Opening with ‘Unspoken’ and moving on through the rest of their debut album, Happiness, Theo Hutchcraft and Adam Anderson have clearly been rifling through Gary Numan‘s style book, and have more than a nodding acquaintance with The Pet Shop Boys in both music and method (although are perhaps not quite up to speed on the irony front). Nonetheless, it’s a damn good-looking show, with Mr Hutchcraft’s studied elegance, diamond-cut cheekbones and careful posing making more than one female fan in my close vicinity scream her lungs out in adoration.

There’s a fine distinction between the dapper, sophisticated pop product of the moment and the played-to-death radio-friendly middling pop staple. Hurts cut it dangerously close to the line. But even my stone-cold indie heart was melted a little at the admittedly overblown but in-the-moment glorious and grand rendition of ‘Stay‘.  And ‘Verona’ is 2011′s ‘Vienna‘, of course. A cover version of Kylie Minoque‘s Confide In Me (which I’ve always thought to be a fantastically sexy pop song) doesn’t live up to the slow-burning sexiness of the original – not that the crowd notices. A few long-stemmed white roses thrown into the crowd, and Messrs. Hutchcraft and Anderson have the crowd eating out of their hands. As far as pop spectacles go, it’s pretty much perfect.

It’s a sold-out show, and as it’s been rather a long time since my last sold-out-concert experience, I’ve forgotten to engage the appropriate concert protocol – ie, getting there super early to get pole position, with sharpened elbows at the ready. So after fighting my way through the crowd and up the stairs, I’ve ended up perched uncomfortably on a ledge somewhere for the duration of the concert. By the time Theo has finished emoting the last few lines of ‘Better than Love’, I’m more than ready to leave the white roses and uplifting hand gestures behind. Sweet treats, I remind myself, are best left for the occasional indulgence.

Review: Rodrigo y Gabriela @ X-Tra, Zurich 06.12.10

Rodrigo y Gabriela‘s reputation proceeds them by a mile, so standing at the bar at X-Tra on Monday night, I feel a familiar frisson of excitement. I love the feeling of anticipation that you get when you know you are about to be well-entertained, but you don’t know exactly how. The shock of the new, y’know, as opposed to those gigs where you know precisely what to expect, down to the setlist and stage moves. After a hectic day, I’m ready to be entertained, goddamnit!

Rodrigo y Gabriela

Finally, I will get the chance to see Rodrigo y Gabriela in action here in my hometown – cool. I’ve been waiting to see them for ages – missed their Zurich gig in April and cursed my bad timing, and wondered whether I would get to see them this year at all considering that problems with Gabriela Quintero’s joints and muscles forced them to cancel their October US tour. But she seems to be recovered, and so they roll into town on Monday 06 December 2010 @ X-Tra in support of their latest album 11:11, five weeks later than the original date of Sunday 31st October due to some passport hassles experienced by Rodrigo Sánchez.

The pair met in Mexico City while playing in hardcore metal bands (this explains their fondness for heavy metal covers, then). They busked their way to fame and fortune after becoming disillusioned with the metal scene in Mexico and setting off for European shores. They ended up in Dublin, Ireland, and got their break after busking on Grafton St. and playing the pub circuit. A support slot for Damien Rice followed, then increasing acclaim. They released their sixth album 11:11 in 2009.

Actually, my first introduction to Rodrigo y Gabriela was this short snippet from French TV show Taratata featuring Brian and Stef from Placebo:

I’m looking forward to the show – expectations are high for an entertaining evening. Stay tuned for a review.

11:11 is out now on Rubyworks. Rodrigo y Gabriela play @ X-Tra 06.12.10, presented by Abart.
