Room with a view – Fanfarlo

It’s been a couple of years since I saw British quintet Fanfarlo at the Ziegel Oh Lac at Zurich’s Rote Fabrik. After the success of their 2009 debut album Reservoir, the indie darlings have toured relentlessly, alone as well as supporting the likes of Snow Patrol and Mumford & Sons, had a song included on the Eclipse soundtrack and just generally gathered inspiration for their latest effort, Rooms Filled With Light.

I have to admit I haven’t had a chance to listen to Rooms Filled With Light yet (so much music, so little time!), but Reservoir was a pretty constant presence on my 2010 playlists. I guess my first introduction to the new album will be hearing it at Rote Fabrik on Wednesday night when the band hit town again. Needless to say, I’m quite looking forward to it. Here’s a taste of what the album has to offer:

Zurich OpenAir update

There have been a couple of line-up changes to the Zurich OpenAir programme recently (which the above programme doesn’t yet reflect).

Additions: The Prodigy (headline on Sunday night), Stereophonics, The Hives, Expatriate.

The Prodigy…I’m a bit underwhelmed. So very 90′s. I never liked their screamy music. I’m still holding out hope (likely in vain) for The Dead Weather…

Subtractions: Fanfarlo. No explanation as to why they cancelled…

Big bummer, I was especially looking forward to seeing them again. I’m not that keen on their replacement, either – Expatriate. The Expatriate guys are lovely, and hail from the land Down Under like me, but their music…it just doesn’t do it for me.

Still, there are still more than enough goodies at the Zurich OpenAir to keep me happy – Placebo, The XX, Belle & Sebastian, Jonsi, JJ, Johnossi, I am Kloot, Hole, The Shout Out Louds…

Zurich OpenAir announces more bands – Hole, JJ, Kate Nash, I Am Kloot and more

The Zurich OpenAir festival (27-29th August 2010) just keeps on getting bigger and better – Hole, JJ, Kate Nash, I Am Kloot and more were added today to the line-up. And there are still more bands to be announced! It’s shaping up to be a weekend of epic proportions. Check out the programme here.

I’m interested to see the latest incarnation of Hole, just because Courtney Love is well, Courtney Love, always seeming to be one step away from self-destruction (which brings out the guilty voyeur in me, I admit, ok). And the famously secretive Swedish JJ, whose ‘Me & Dean’ breaks my heart every time I hear it:

Placebo headline the Zürich OpenAir on Friday 27th August 2010

Holy shizzle, this came out of the blue!

27 of the 45 acts playing the Zürich OpenAir festival (Friday/Saturday/Sunday 27-29th August 2010) were announced today, and it’s a killer lineup (for me at least) – Placebo are headlining (Friday 27th August 2010), along with The XX (perhaps I will finally get to see them? I’m not counting my chickens before they hatch), Fanfarlo, Shout Out Louds, Johnossi, Mando Diao, Faithless, Underworld, Deus, Adam Green, Get Well Soon, Local Natives, The Soundtrack of Our Lives, and more. Can’t wait to see what else they have up their sleeve for the remaining bands.

The first Zürich OpenAir in 2007 was a modest affair at the ETH Zürich’s Hönggerberg location, and since then the festival has grown moderately, but this year’s programme has seen a massive jump in the status of bands and acts. This year the festival will be held at Rümlang, near the Zürich Airport, still easily accessible by Tram 10 from the Hauptbahnhof.

A limited number (2000) of presale 3-day passes are available now for CHF 130 through Starticket, but don’t expect them to last long – I’ve already got my tickets as have many of my friends. Day and weekend passes will be available shortly.

RIP Devon Clifford – the Canadian music scene is reeling after the sudden death of You Say Party! We Say Die! drummer Devon Clifford. Clifford collapsed after a massive brain haemorrhage on stage in Vancouver on Friday night. So young – he was only 30. Heartfelt condolences to his family and bandmates.
The National’s new album High Violet will be streamed in full, by The New York Times on Friday 23rd April 2010 as a preemptive measure against a low-quality leak that is making its way around the internets. As the boys say, take the time to hear it at its intended level of quality.
Silversun Pickups announce dates for US tour with Against Me! and Henry Clay people.
Fanfarlo will be touring Germany in the near future – stay tuned for details.
