Thanks to the massive publicity generated by her über-successful Kickstarter album campaign, Amanda Palmer (sometimes also known as Amanda Fucking Palmer) has been lately saddled with the rather burdensome title of ‘the future of music’. Phew! That’s no easy thing to live up to.
One gets the sense, though, that Palmer and her Grand Theft Orchestra pals couldn’t care less about titles and/or being the latest buzz thing. Rather, Palmer remains intensely focused on bringing her punk cabaret/glam rock creativity and performance art to her (massive) legion of fans around the world, and maintaining a deep and genuine communication with her fans via her immensely popular Twitter feed and other social media platforms.
After starting out as one half of the hugely successful ‘Brechtian punk cabaret’ duo Dresden Dolls, and later ‘conjoined twin’ duo Evelyn Evelyn, Palmer become firmly established as a solo performer with the release of her 2008 album, Who Killed Amanda Palmer? After announcing in April 2012 that she was using Kickstarter to fund her next album with the Grand Theft Orchestra, over $1.2 million was raised in one month, resulting in the Theatre Is Evil album, released in September 2012.
