Yet another good thing hailing from Scandinavian shores: Danish singer/songwriter Agnes Obel. Just like the cover portraiture of her debut album Philharmonics, Obel’s repertoire is evocative and finely wrought, with just a touch of melancholic tragedy.
Now based in Berlin, Obel released Philharmonics in late 2010, an album of solemn, piano-led beauty and fragile lyricism. Obel was awarded the Danish National Radio Talent Prize for Philharmonics, and was also named as one of the winners of the European Border Breakers Awards for 2012. The song ‘Riverside’ (used in the soundtrack for the film Submarino) won the Robert Award for the Best Original Song of the Year 2011, and also had the (somewhat dubious) honour of being featured in an episode of the TV series Grey’s Anatomy.
