Cat’s Eyes – oh, the horror, the horror!

Continuing my run of spectral, dark gothy pop, here comes Cat’s EyesFaris Badwan, more recently of goth-punk band The Horrors, and Rachel Zeffira, an accomplished Canadian soprano and multi-instrumentalist. Cat’s Eyes gave their first performance in December at the Vatican, of all places – guess there wasn’t a mosh pit then, what with the seven cardinals in attendance and all.

Guess someone up there approves, because it’s all going swimmingly for the black-clad duo. Released in April, their eponymous debut album is a darkly atmospheric take on Spector-esque (Phil, not the ghostly type) girl-group pop. There are some Pope-worthy choral moments, too.

Watch the funereal, goose-bump inducing performance of ‘I Knew It Was Over’, performed live at the Vatican:

Cat’s Eyes play @ Hafenkneipe 26.05.11. Tickets here or at the door on the night.

Cat’s Eyes is out now on Polydor.
