Continuing my run of spectral, dark gothy pop, here comes Cat’s Eyes – Faris Badwan, more recently of goth-punk band The Horrors, and Rachel Zeffira, an accomplished Canadian soprano and multi-instrumentalist. Cat’s Eyes gave their first performance in December at the Vatican, of all places – guess there wasn’t a mosh pit then, what with the seven cardinals in attendance and all.
Guess someone up there approves, because it’s all going swimmingly for the black-clad duo. Released in April, their eponymous debut album is a darkly atmospheric take on Spector-esque (Phil, not the ghostly type) girl-group pop. There are some Pope-worthy choral moments, too.
