Naming your band after your chosen hometown is a brave move – can we surmise that home is where the heart is for Sheffield band The Crookes? That’s not such a bad thing, because it is shows a sweetly sentimental side to the erudite indie quartet.
Picked as one of Steve Lamacq‘s (BBC 6 Music) best new bands of 2009, as well as The Guardian‘s Band of the Day in September 2009, the four Sheffield University literature students signed to indie guitar stronghold Fierce Panda Records to record their debut album Chasing After Ghosts. Steeped in lyricism and striving to capture the dizzying feeling of rapture they themselves felt when listening to favourites such as The Violent Femmes‘ ‘Blister in the Sun‘, The Cure, and Elvis Presley, Chasing After Ghosts is chock full of heartbreaking works of staggering genius.
