Placebo + The Cure: A tale of two Reduxes

I’ve been on a Placebo bender of late, revisiting all my old faves in the absence of anything newsworthy from the Placeboworld camp. The wait between albums is painfully long, isn’t it?

So here for your delectation is one from the archives, featuring two of my all-time faves – Placebo + The Cure sharing a stage together in a fabulous explosion of mascara, hair gel, smoky eye make-up and guitars (and check out The Molko’s mullet!), for the 20th anniversary of TV station Canal + at Zenith, Paris, 14th October 2004 -

Which reminds me of all the good times back in 2010, especially @ Zurich Open Air:

And how about this heartfelt rendition of ‘I Know’, from 2007 in Kansas City (will I ever get to hear this live?):

Both Placebo and The Cure issued Reduxes in 2010, and they were two of the few CDs that I actually bought in 2010 (as opposed to digital downloads) because the physical artefacts themselves were so damn enticing – Placebo released Battle For The Sun: Redux Edition with a remastered Battle For The Sun CD plus 10-track bonus CD (featuring studio versions of the acclaimed Angkor Wat arrangements of ‘Because I want You‘, ‘Blind’, ‘Twenty Years’ and ‘Drag’ – I love those), Atticus + Placebo t-shirt and liner notes penned by The Molko’s very own hands, and The Cure re-reissued their seminal 1989 album of epic grandeur and gothic rock beauty, Disintegration, in a 3-disc extravaganza (the remastered original Disintegration, a disc of outtakes and demos, and one of live performances from Wembley in 1989 – you can tell it’s the 80s just by the synthesizers!). That’s five CDs of glorious goodness, still getting the high rotation treatment months later – these ones are keepers for sure.

Placebo are currently taking a well-earned break (but are hopefully gearing up for more good things in the studio). Battle For The Sun: Redux Edition is available now.

The Cure headline Bestival 2011 8-11th September. Disintegration: The Deluxe Edition is out now on Universal.

  2. I love that song so much, it seems you too, so here’s an another live: March 30th 2007 Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo Santagio Chile. You go to PLACEBORUSSIA and you can watch the entire gig AWESOME, and so much more…gigs from 1995 to 2010 (concerts/video) and articles, clips etc… But I’m quite sure you already know that Russian’s Fan site. As you said, it’s very painful, all of a sudden Blackout, but after these 2 years of an harassing, amazing TOUR, they deserved it. We, Placebo Lovers have to learn to be patient and just wait for the 7th Album! (one only wish Not Too Long)

    • Yep, I love the Placeborussia site :) It’s awesome. Consoling myself during the long wait with hours of Youtube…but of course that is no substitute for the REAL THING: Come on, Brian, Stef + Steve, get writing!

  3. I too was listening to this the other day, I spent much of my youth going to cure gigs and have loved Placebo since they started…I must admit it’s probably my fault the ozone layer is somewhat thinner than it should be from the sheer amount of hairspray I used back then…Love to everyone with this incredable music taste…particularly us oldies, who have been there from the beginning and who are still tuning in….may we never go deaf and may they never stop playing…I love you all…Major Tomsk xxxx

    • Yeah, us oldies rock, Major Tomsk! Sadly I only ever saw The Cure once, and that was in a huge stadium, so was particularly unfulfilling. But I have hopes that they will hit the road again one day…
